Updated Guidance: Effective Sunday, June 12 at 12:01 a.m. EDT, the CDC rescinded its Order requiring all airline or other aircraft passengers to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 to board any aircraft destined to the United States from a foreign country. Of note, CDC’s Order requiring proof of vaccination for non-U.S. citizen nonimmigrants to travel to the United States is still in effect. For more information see Requirement for Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination for Air Passengers.
Check the CDC website for additional information and Frequently Asked Questions.
Exceptions to the vaccine requirement will be considered by CDC on an extremely limited basis. Please visit the CDC webpages for more information about exceptions.
Important Information Regarding Requests for Vaccination Exceptions:
- The CDC will adjudicate and approve or deny all requests for exception to the vaccination requirement for humanitarian or emergency reasons. As the Order has been issued to reduce introduction of the known COVID variants, as well as future variants, CDC has instructed that the criteria for exceptions are narrow, and the urgency must be readily apparent. Individuals may request a waiver through AthensCDCWaiver@State.Gov.
- Athens Consular Section will gather the information from individuals who assert a need for an exception to vaccination requirement. Athens Consular Section will forward the request to the CDC for adjudication.
Waiver Application Process – Please follow all steps detailed below carefully:
Applicants will carefully review the information on the Webpage and Travel | CDC. Also, check out the useful quiz CDC designed to help travelers assess whether they may travel to the U.S. and what documentation they need to board a flight. Scroll down to the “Travel Assessment” banner and click “Get Started”: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/international-travel/travel-assessment/index.html.
Complete the online form at https://gr.usembassy.gov/visas/athens-cdc-waiver/cdc-waiver-form/ – please note that all fields must be completed.
Athens Consular Section will forward the request to the CDC for adjudication.
The CDC will provide a form letter response to any request for exception directly to U.S. Embassy (or the Embassy/consulate which forwarded the request). The form letter will either approve the requested exception, which will allow the individual to travel to the United States, either directly or by transit, or deny the exception. The letter also likely will contain testing/quarantine requirements for travelers while in the United States.
Athens CONS will transmit the response to the traveler or requestor as quickly as possible. If/when the CDC provides the response letter via email directly to the individual or organization, they will also copy Athens CONS using the email address on the incoming request.
