
U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) led a delegation of U.S. Senators to Athens and Lesvos, Greece October 9-11. Accompanying Senator Shaheen on the official visit were U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
While in Athens, the delegation met with senior government officials, including Minister of State Alekos Flambouraris and Minister of Economy George Stathakis, as well as a range of civil society leaders. On the island of Lesvos, the delegation met with local officials, business representatives, and visited refugee reception and registration facilities. During its visit, the delegation focused on the refugee crisis and its impacts. In its contacts with Greek officials, the delegation also discussed the economic situation in the country and efforts to restore economic stability. Following their visit to Greece, the delegation visited Ukraine and Germany to discuss regional security and the refugee crisis.
