March – June 2021
The U.S. Embassy in Athens’ “Athens American Center” is pleased to announce the third iteration of its popular American Literature series. The book discussion group that was first introduced in 2019 will continue in March, focusing on newly-released Greek translations of seven American novels. Distinguished Greek academics, book reviewers, and translators have volunteered their time to lead discussions via the Zoom platform on Wednesday evenings from March – June, 2021.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss works by American authors: Don DeLillo, Jesmyn Ward, Tara Westover, Robert Penn Warren, John Dos Passos, Elizabeth Strout, and Colson Whitehead.
The first session will take place on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 18:30 and will feature The Silence by Don DeLillo. Cultural editor and writer Ilias Maglinis, translator Zoe Bella-Armaou, and writer Lefteris Kalospyros will lead the discussion.
This is a professional development program designed for:
1. High school teachers of literature and/or the English language
2. Graduate and Post-Graduate students of American literature
3. Creative writing instructors
4. Book club coordinators
5. Editors and translators
6. Book reviewers
The American Literature series aims to familiarize participants with the influential and groundbreaking fiction of American writers. This iteration will include discussions on how history, politics, human rights, culture, family, and other issues are addressed in the selected novels. The scope of the program also includes encouraging the use of these texts in relevant courses, including in creative writing courses and book club activities.
The program will be conducted in Greek and is free of charge. Availability is limited, so participants are asked to register in advance by contacting athensamericancenter@state.gov. Complete information about the novels selected for the series will be provided upon receipt of registration. The deadline to register is March 12, 2021
