**Effective April 2, the Department of States ceased printing and shipping ten year passports to Embassies overseas because of public health measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If you previously applied for a passport, you should expect significant delays in receiving your passport. Please consider waiting to apply until we resume normal operations.
If you choose to send you renewal application by mail, be advised that we do not know when your passport will be printed in the United States and sent to the Embassy for further courier delivery to you. If you need your current passport back in the interim, we can return it to you via courier at your expense (5 Euros in Athens, 8 Euros outside of Athens).
In an emergency and proof of travel within 72 hours, the Embassy may be able to print an emergency passport valid for a year or less for an adult or a minor. You must email AthensAmericanPassports@state.gov to explain your emergency; please do not come to the Embassy without prior approval as you may not be admitted.
We will update this site when printing for ten year passports resumes.**
For your convenience, we encourage you to apply for a passport renewal by mail from the comfort of your home, avoiding disruptions in public transportation due to strikes, heavy traffic jams, unfavorable weather conditions, and waiting in security lines.
You may renew your passport by mail, if you meet all of the following requirements:
Your most recent U.S Passport:
- Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application;
- Was issued within the last 15 years;
- Was issued with 10 year validity; and
- Was issued in your current name or you have changed your name and can submit legal documentation (e.g. marriage certificate, Change of Name Deed) to prove this change.
If your most recent U.S. Passport meets the above requirements, continue to the next buttons to send us your application complete. Incomplete applications will delay passport processing.
If you do not meet all these requirements, please follow the instructions here.
