The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Athens and its Athens American Center proudly announce our next American Literature Series focused on the highly popular and influential genre of short fiction. The program will take place from October 13, 2021, to January 19, 2022, and is a follow-up of two successful prior seminars and a book presentation series.
The eighteen selected American authors/short story writers to be presented at the seminars are: O. Henry, Sherwood Anderson, Dorothy Parker, Ernest Hemingway, Bernard Malamud, Patricia Highsmith, Grace Paley, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Lucia Berlin, Ann Beattie, Tobias Wolff, Amy Hempel, Lydia Davis, George Saunders, Jhumpa Lahiri, Denis Johnson and Anthony Marra.
The upcoming series of ten seminars will be led by distinguished Greek writers Theodoros Grigoriadis (2016 State Literature Prize) and Vangelis Provias and will be held online via the Zoom platform.
This is a professional development program designed for:
- High school teachers of literature and/or the English language
- Graduate and Post-Graduate students of American literature
- Creative writing instructors
- Book club coordinators
- Editors and translators
- Book reviewers
The program aims to familiarize participants with the work of major American writers as well as the history, evolution and prominence of this distinct literary form that contributed to American literature with its content and aesthetic value.
Participants will be encouraged to use these texts in relevant courses, and in creative writing exercises and book club activities.
The first meeting will take place on October 13, 2021.
This program will be in Greek, is free of charge and of limited availability, so participants must register in advance. The deadline to register is September 27, 2021.
Certificates of attendance will be provided to participants upon successful completion of the program.
