Documenta 14

American Artist Rick Lower participating in Documenta14 in Athens

U.S. Embassy Athens is supporting Documenta 14, one of the largest and most important contemporary art events in the world, and in particular the Victoria Square Project by artist Rick Lowe. Known for the Project Row Houses, Rick Lowe is a well-known creator focusing on the convergence of community and art. For his Victoria Square Project in Athens he worked with local NGOs, community groups, store owners and longtime inhabitants of the area of Victoria Square to develop a popup art space on Elpidos Street. The VSP venue is now open to the area community for exhibits, discussions and workshops.

The goal of the project is to bring art close to local communities, especially communities with diverse ethnic and social backgrounds – and present art as a way to engage and bring communities together. The long term goal is that this community art project will be a catalyst for establishing a platform for collaboration and integration for the diverse cultures among the Kypseli neighborhood.

This is the first time that the Documenta exhibition is taking place outside of its hometown in Kassel, Germany.
